Roof & Building Clearance
Branches touching or overhanging your home cause more damage than most homeowners realize. TreeMax clears trees away from roofs, gutters, siding, and foundations — protecting your investment before costly repairs become necessary.
How Overhanging Branches Damage Your Home
It's easy to overlook tree branches growing close to your home — especially when they provide welcome shade in Sacramento's hot summers. But contact between trees and structures creates a slow-moving chain of damage that can cost thousands of dollars if left unaddressed. Here's what's really happening when branches overhang your roof and walls:
Roof & Shingle Damage
Branches that rest on or scrape across your roof in the wind act like sandpaper on shingles. Over time, granules wear away, leaving shingles thin and vulnerable to water infiltration. Accumulated leaves and debris trap moisture against the roof surface, accelerating rot in wood decking beneath.
Clogged Gutters & Water Damage
Trees directly over gutters deposit leaves, twigs, seeds, and seed pods with every breeze and every storm. Clogged gutters can't drain properly, causing water to back up under eaves, overflow onto siding, and ultimately seep into your walls and foundation. Overflowing gutters are a leading cause of basement moisture and crawlspace flooding.
Pest & Rodent Highways
Branches that touch or approach your roofline give rats, squirrels, and other rodents a direct highway into your attic. Once inside, they chew electrical wiring, insulation, and structural wood. Removing branch contact with your roof is one of the most effective pest prevention measures available.
Foundation & Root Intrusion
While above-ground clearance is the focus of most homeowners, some trees planted too close to a structure send roots toward foundation walls, drain pipes, and sewer lines. Our assessment includes evaluating proximity to foundations and noting any root-related risks that should be addressed.
Siding & Paint Damage
Branches that rub against wood, stucco, or composite siding break down protective coatings, expose raw material, and create entry points for water and insects. The constant abrasion from wind movement makes this damage cumulative and often goes unnoticed until significant deterioration has occurred.
Our Roof Clearance Approach
TreeMax aims to provide at least 10 feet of clearance between tree canopies and rooflines wherever possible, and complete clearance from all direct contact points. We don't just cut back whatever is touching — we assess the whole tree to plan cuts that achieve lasting clearance without stressing the tree unnecessarily.
All pruning cuts are made at proper branch unions using ISA-approved techniques. We never leave stubs or make flush cuts that compromise bark collar integrity. Proper cuts heal cleanly, reducing the risk of disease entering the tree and ensuring the clearance holds as long as possible before regrowth requires attention.
After clearing, we provide an estimate for how often the area will need maintenance based on the tree species and growth rate. Fast-growing species like sycamore or liquid amber may need annual attention, while slower-growing oaks may only need clearance every two to three years.
